Clare Wright
Clare Wright is an award-winning historian, author and public commentator who has worked in politics, academia and the media.
Clare holds a PhD in Australian Studies from Melbourne University. She is an internationally recognised scholar, specialising in the social history of alcohol in Australia, feminist cultural history and women’s political history. Her doctoral thesis is the subject of her first book, Beyond the Ladies Lounge: Australia’s Female Publicans (Melbourne University Press, 2003). Clare also holds a Master of Arts in Public History from Monash University where she honed her skills and commitment to popularising and publicising history. Clare is a former Executive Officer of the History Council of Victoria.
Clare has published opinion pieces, feature articles and essays for the Age, The Bulletin, Crikey and Overland as well as leading scholarly journals. She has also worked as a political speechwriter and consultant historian. She is a frequent contributor to ABC Radio and a regular member of The Brains Trust on ABC TV’s The Einstein Factor. She has made numerous guest appearances on commercial and ABC television variety shows and documentary productions. Known for her wit and dynamism, Clare is a highly sought after public speaker.
Clare is currently an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellow at La Trobe University. She is researching a book that retells the Eureka Stockade story from a female perspective. Her work on this subject has been cited in Victorian and ACT Parliaments.
